Where Have All the Motorcyclists Gone?

If you’ve had the sense that you’re seeing fewer motorcycles cruising down the highway or parked at your favorite local hangout, you’re not just imagining things. Motorcycling has long been a symbol of freedom and adventure, but lately, it seems like the freedom loving motorcycle community has gotten smaller and smaller. So where exactly have they gone?

So where did they all go?

Motorcycling is still alive and well, but the community has seen some demographic shifts that have really changed the landscape.

First and foremost, a lot of motorcyclists you’ll find are older. You know, the ones who got into riding during the 70’s and 80’s. Some of those guys are still riding, sure. But many have hung their riding helmets for the last time and younger folks are just not embracing riding culture in equal numbers of their predecessors.

Secondly, being a motorcyclist today is expensive! The high cost of ownership is simply the first hurdle to get over. Once you factor in gear, insurance and upkeep, motorcycles quickly become a luxury many choose to forgo for more sensible and wallet-friendly options. A car becomes more practical and economical when compared to a motorcycle, albeit not as much fun.

Another reason you may see fewer bikers on the road is that people are more safety conscious than before. Perform a quick Google search for motorcycle news and blogs and you’ll soon find yourself overwhelmed at the sheer number of motorcycle accidents. Truth be told, a motorcycle accident is still a rarity, especially when riding safely. Reality however, is subject to perception and sadly motorcycles are often seen as death machines rather than the beautifully crafted vehicles that they truly are.

    Reasons to Stay Excited

It’s not all doom and gloom, though! Motorcycle manufacturers are creating new bikes that are more affordable, beginner-friendly, and most including the latest technology. Plus, the sense of community that makes riding so special hasn’t gone anywhere. Motorcycle Clubs, rallies, and online forums are still bringing riders together.

Where to Find the Motorcycle Community

Some motorcycle riders are lone wolves and that rider is respected and left to his devices. But for those of us that are looking for our pack, we think riding is best when we ride together. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to connect with fellow motorcyclists, if you’re lookin’.

    1. CycleFish.com
Think of CycleFish as your home base for all things motorcycling. It’s packed with event listings, like rallies and bike nights, as well as forums, and directories of biker-friendly businesses. Whether you’re looking for a rally or tips on your next trip, this site has got you covered.
    2. Local Motorcycle Clubs
Joining a club is a fantastic way to meet other riders. Whether it’s a Motorcycle Club (MC) or Riding Club (RC), a big group like the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.), a Motorcycle Rights Organization (MRO) like A.B.A.T.E., or even a smaller local crew, you’re sure to find your people.
    3. Social Media & Apps
Platforms like Facebook and Instagram are full of motorcycle groups where you can share photos, stories, and tips. Apps like REVER also make it easy to find new routes and plan rides with friends.

Bringing Back the Joy of Riding

The motorcycling community remains strong and vibrant, with plenty to offer both seasoned riders and newcomers alike. Whether you’ve been riding for years or are simply curious about what makes motorcycling so special, now is an excellent time to dive in. Affordable, beginner-friendly bikes and the rise of electric motorcycles are making the hobby more accessible than ever. Add to that the enduring sense of camaraderie through motorcycle clubs, rallies, and online forums, and it’s clear that the joy of riding is far from fading away.

Let’s Keep the Motorcycling Spirit & Culture Alive

If you’ve missed hearing the roar of motorcycles on the open road, don’t worry - the motorcycling spirit is alive and well. However, to ensure the culture thrives, today’s riders need to pass the torch to younger generations. Back in the 60’s through the 80’s, older bikers welcomed newcomers, sharing their knowledge of bikes and the freedom-filled culture that encompass the world of motorcycles. That tradition seems to have waned, but it’s not too late to bring it back. Let’s reignite that mentorship, inspire new riders, and preserve the biker legacy for generations to come. So, grab your helmet, connect with others on CycleFish.com, and keep the passion for motorcycling alive.
