Since 1987, Rolling Thunder® Inc has worked to ensure our government is doing its utmost to bring full accountability for prisoners of war (POWs) and missing in action (MIA) service members of all U.S. wars - to take care of our military personnel during and after battle. It has grown into a large charitable organization with over 90 chartered chapters across the USA. Each year on Memorial Day, members of Rolling Thunder® Inc converge on Washington, D.C. for the annual demonstration known as Rolling Thunder® Inc “Ride for Freedom”.
This year’s demonstration takes place on Sunday, May 26th and will be dedicated to raising awareness to the plight of Bowe Bergdahl. As America’s only know POW in Afghanistan, the 5 year forces veteran and 26 year old sergeant had been reported missing near the town of Yahya Khel on June 30th, 2009. Assigned to the 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division based out of Richardson, Alaska, he has since been forced to appear as a captive in 5 Taliban videos, where his captors are demanding the release of Afghani prisoners being held in Guantanamo Bay in exchange for Bergdahl’s freedom. In his last of these videos, it was evident he had been beaten and the over 930 days of captivity were taking a toll on the young hero.
Rolling Thunder®’s has had incredible success - 7 POW’s who were detained in the Iraqi conflict are now back on home soil—results stemming directly from the organizations support and efforts. They have also been diligent in getting legislation enacted, raising money and awareness for the cause and helping to support veterans. Rolling Thunder® Inc vows to continue to ride on Washington until all POWs and MIAs are accounted for and to serve as a continuous reminder that we should never, ever abandon our troops, during and after war.
Carrying the mantra of “We Will Not Forget”, Rolling Thunder® Inc will ride on Washington to remind our politicians that our countrymen and women still need our help. Rolling Thunder® Inc has invited anyone to attend and show support, even if they are not card carrying members of the organization.
This year’s demonstration is expected to garner approximately 900,000 riders, all in support of a single, unifying cause. If you wish to show your support, do not hesitate to join in on the action. No cards or fees are required, just show up and make your voice heard.
