Sturgis 2012 has come and gone and already my sights are looking forward to 2013 and the 73rd Anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and with Toby Keith and ZZ Top already announced to be performing at the Legendary Sturgis Buffalo Chip 2013 will be a stellar year to attend.
Sturgis is 73 years of a lot of work, creativity and the ambition to create an incredible experience, like no other, for all those who attend. Clarence “Pappy” Hoel and the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle club started it all with the first Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (Called the Black Hills Classic the first year) in 1938. The first Sturgis rally was sparse in contrast to recent Sturgis Rallys, with only roughly 200 people in attendance who went to watch motorcycle stunts and racing.
As the years rolled by the popularity of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally grew to legendary proportions and is the one rally that is on the "Bucket List" of motorcyclists worldwide.
Why do we love Sturgis?
Where does one start when discussing why they love Sturgis so much?
Scenery and Rides: The Sturgis, South Dakota area is breathtaking. You have many scenic routes to choose from including Devils Tower, Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore and Deadwood which all contain beautiful landscapes.
Main Street Sturgis: Main Street is where the bulk of the action during the motorcycle rally happens during the day and it's motorcycles only. Vendors galore, bars, restaurants and motorcycles and fellow riders from all over the planet.
The Sturgis Buffalo Chip: This is my favorite place to be - the Legendary Buffalo Chip. I enjoy being there from sun-up to sundown. From getting my morning coffee in the amphitheater in the morning to watching the world class concerts there at night, the 'Chip' has it all. In 2012 the new CrossRoads was added which is a free access area that allows riders not staying at the Chip to have a taste of the 'Buffalo Chip experience.' The CrossRoads offers food, entertainment, vendors and it's very own Zip Line. You can camp in a tent at the Chip or RV it and if you get your passes early (fall 2012) you can save a lot of money, and as I mentioned, Toby Keith and ZZ Top already announced for 2013 - it looks like 2013 will be a top year for concerts.
The people: I have saved the best for last. You can't top the people you will meet at Sturgis. When August rolls around I feel like I am getting ready to head 'home' and to see not just friends, but people who have become family and when the rally ends I feel a sense of sadness that I will not be back for another year but happy that I will be back in 2013.
Who else is looking forward to 2013 Sturgis Rally already?
